Ceòlmhor is an Edinburgh-based Highland bagpipe tuition and performance business founded on the conviction that the instrument cannot be taught or performed without the Gàidhlig culture and tradition that created it. Tuition is available in person in Edinburgh and online worldwide. Professional performance is available for weddings, funerals, Burns Suppers, corporate dinners, graduations, ceilidhs, and other occasions across Scotland and beyond. The name means resonant or melodious in Scottish Gaelic — pronounced kyawl-vor.

Ceòlmhor is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. In-person tuition is available in Edinburgh. Online tuition is available worldwide via Zoom. Performance engagements are taken across Scotland and further afield — travel beyond the first five miles from Edinburgh city centre is subject to a surcharge of £0.50 per mile.

Ceòlmhor is available for performance engagements across Scotland and internationally. There is no fixed limit on travel distance — engagements in the Highlands, the Borders, and beyond Edinburgh are all considered. A travel surcharge of £0.50 per mile applies beyond the first five miles from Edinburgh city centre. For destinations requiring overnight accommodation, costs are discussed individually at the enquiry stage.

All enquiries submitted via the contact form are responded to within 24 hours. For urgent enquiries — particularly those relating to funerals or time-sensitive bookings — please note your urgency in the message field and a response will be prioritised.

All bookings begin with an enquiry via the contact form. A written quote is issued within 24 hours, valid for 14 days. Once agreed, a written contract is issued and a 50% non-refundable deposit secures the date. The remaining balance is due 7 days before the engagement. No performance or tuition arrangement is confirmed without a signed agreement.

Gift vouchers are not currently available but are planned for future introduction. If you are interested in gifting a trial lesson or a performance booking, please get in touch directly via the contact form and a bespoke arrangement can be discussed.

Yes. Ceòlmhor holds full public liability insurance for both tuition and live performance. Felix Walker is a PVG scheme member, qualified and insured to teach students of all ages including children. Ceòlmhor is also a member of PRS for Music.

No prior musical experience is required. The most important thing is a willingness to learn. Tuition begins on the practice chanter — a small, quiet instrument on which every Highland piper learns the fundamentals — and progresses to the full Highland bagpipe at Tier III. Bagpipes are not required until that stage.

Yes — a practice chanter is required from the first lesson. If you do not already own one, guidance on purchasing a suitable instrument is provided at enrolment. A basic practice chanter typically costs between £20 and £50 and is available from most Scottish music retailers and online. Bagpipes are not required until Tier III of the curriculum.

The first trial lesson is complimentary — a full structured lesson with no obligation to continue. Regular tuition is £30 per hour. A block booking of 10 lessons is available at the price of 9, representing a saving of £30. Sessions of 30 minutes and 90 minutes can be arranged upon request — 90-minute sessions are recommended in the run-up to a competition or performance.

Progress depends on the individual student, the regularity of practice, and the standard being aimed for. Most students reach the full Highland bagpipe at Tier III within one to two years of consistent weekly lessons. Reaching competition standard at Tier IV typically takes several years of dedicated study. The practice chanter alone can be a rewarding instrument in its own right — many students enjoy years of progress before transitioning to the full pipes.

The Ceòlmhor curriculum is structured across four progressive tiers. Tier I (Foundational) covers the practice chanter, basic scale, posture, and five tunes. Tier II (Developing) introduces gracenotes, doublings, and repertoire building. Tier III (Proficient) covers the transition to the full Highland bagpipe, blowing technique, tuning, and public performance. Tier IV (Advanced) covers March, Strathspey and Reel sets, Pìobaireachd, and competition preparation. Each tier has defined progression markers and students advance when they are ready.

Yes. Ceòlmhor is a PVG scheme member and is qualified and insured to teach junior students. A parent or guardian must provide written consent before the first lesson, covering data collection, lesson recording policy, and communication channels. The practice chanter is an ideal first instrument for younger students — it is quiet, affordable, and can be learned at any age.

Yes. Online tuition is available worldwide via Zoom. A stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone are required. A link is sent in advance of each session. Online lessons follow the same structured curriculum as in-person lessons and are available at all four tiers.

Yes, subject to availability. Students who begin online and subsequently move to Edinburgh, or who prefer to alternate between formats, can arrange this at enrolment or at any point during their tuition. Both formats follow the same curriculum and progression structure.

Cancellations with more than 48 hours notice will be rescheduled at no charge. Cancellations within 48 hours are charged at the full lesson rate unless the slot can be filled. Repeated late cancellations may result in the end of the tuition arrangement.

Yes — Pìobaireachd (the great music of the Highland bagpipe, also known as ceòl mór) is introduced at Tier IV of the Ceòlmhor curriculum. It is the oldest and most complex form of pipe music, rooted in the Gàidhlig tradition, and is taught with full attention to its cultural and historical context. Pìobaireachd is among the most distinctive and demanding repertoire in any musical tradition.

All tuition includes a welcome pack for new students, progress tracking and written feedback after every lesson, access to practice resources, a response within 24 hours to any queries between lessons, and access to Ceòlmhor's tailored student progression app (currently in development).

Ceòlmhor offers three wedding packages. The Ceremony Piper package covers the full ceremonial role — arrival music, bridal procession, signing of the register, and recessional — at £225. The Reception Piper package adds drinks reception piping and photograph background music at £300. The Full Wedding Piper package includes the complete day from arrival to grand entrance at £350. An additional performance set is available at £75. All prices are subject to a travel surcharge of £0.50 per mile beyond the first five miles from Edinburgh city centre.

Ceòlmhor provides professional piping for weddings and civil ceremonies, funerals and memorials, Burns Suppers and traditional gatherings, St Andrew's Night and Hogmanay celebrations, corporate dinners and receptions, ceilidhs and cultural events, graduations and civic ceremonies, and bespoke occasions arranged on enquiry. Performance engagements are available across Scotland and internationally.

Full Highland dress is worn for all formal performance engagements — including weddings, funerals, Burns Suppers, corporate dinners, and civic ceremonies. Dress is considered and appropriate to the occasion in every case.

Yes. Repertoire requests are discussed and agreed in advance of every engagement. Ceòlmhor maintains a full repertoire spanning marches, airs, laments, jigs, reels, strathspeys, and Pìobaireachd. If you have a specific tune in mind — for a processional, a lament, or a celebratory piece — please include it in your enquiry and availability within the repertoire will be confirmed.

For weddings, bookings are recommended at least six to twelve months in advance, particularly for peak summer weekends and popular venues. For funerals, Ceòlmhor operates a priority response policy and will always endeavour to accommodate short-notice bookings. For Burns Suppers and corporate events, two to three months notice is generally sufficient, though earlier is always better for preferred dates.

In the event of illness or an unforeseen circumstance preventing performance, Ceòlmhor will make every effort to source a replacement piper of equivalent standard. If a replacement cannot be found, a full refund of all monies paid will be issued. This commitment is included in the written contract issued for every booking.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure the date. If the booking is cancelled by the client, the deposit is retained. If the cancellation occurs within 14 days of the engagement, the full balance may be charged at Ceòlmhor's discretion. All cancellation terms are set out in the written contract issued at the time of booking.

Yes. Ceòlmhor understands that funeral arrangements are often made at short notice and treats all funeral enquiries as a priority. Please contact directly via the enquiry form noting the urgency and a response will be issued as quickly as possible. The funeral and memorial rate starts from £125.

Yes. Ceòlmhor has performed internationally and is available for engagements outside Scotland. For engagements requiring travel beyond driving distance, accommodation and travel costs are discussed individually at the enquiry stage. Destination weddings, overseas Burns Suppers, and international corporate events are all considered.

Yes. A written contract is issued for every performance engagement without exception. No performance takes place without a signed contract and deposit received. The contract covers repertoire, timings, travel, cancellation terms, and all other relevant details. This protects both parties and ensures complete clarity before the engagement.
